About Me . . .
Born and raised in Hong Kong, I moved to the United States after high school. As a new immigrant speaking limited English, I struggled through college. With hard work and perseverance, I graduated with honors in accounting. Yet, I believed that I was not good enough... until I met Jesus. I spent a lot of time in church, while my auditing career was sailing smoothly and successfully most of the time.
Why did I study counseling? People in church naturally shared their personal struggles with me. I listened wholeheartedly, but I didn’t know what to tell them. So, I began taking counseling classes after work. The Lord opened door after door for me to complete all internships and become licensed as a LMFT.
A few years ago I began my PhD journey and said goodbye to my auditing career. I hope to become a professor and a clinical supervisor, making a significant impact by training more students to become psychotherapists.
My Emphasis . . .
No one has a perfect life. Everyone is struggling with something—changes and life transitions (new job, new school, new home, new relationship, new baby, graduation, retirement), losses (academic or professional failures, health decline, loss of loved ones), relationship issues with self, others, and God, to name a few. It is normal to struggle. It is part of being a human. You don’t need to struggle alone. It’s ok to ask for help. It’s nice to have someone listen and help you sort things out. My training in systemic thinking will offer you fresh perspectives to your struggles. I emphasize psychoeducation, because I have found that when you understand some basic concepts, many things will make sense, and you can gradually walk out of what has seemed so dark.
My Unique Qualifications . . .
My Values . . .
Personally… As a middle-aged, single, Chinese American, Christian woman, I have deeply reflected on and resolved to appreciate my unique identity. As a Hongkonger, I speak Cantonese at home with my mom and my sister. As a caregiver of my elderly mom and developmentally disabled sister, I know what caregiver stress means. As an immigrant, I have gone through the growing pains of becoming an American.
Professionally… As a lifetime learner, I have studied different therapy modalities and various clinical issues to find the best treatments for my clients. As a curious person, I have interned at various settings to gain valuable clinical experiences, including running anxiety and depression support groups in the community, conducting Christian-based family psychoeducational programs in church settings, providing therapy to patients and families in hospices, counseling people with serious mental illness and addiction issues in a residential facility, and providing school-based counseling to elementary and middle-schoolers. As a LMFT, I strive to give the best to each of my clients.
